In all the inventions which have revolutionized the way we drive, none has made such an impact on the everyday lives of drivers like the hands-free card. Pascaline, Head Cross-Cutting Products for Renault Group Products will walk us through the history and development of this compact device.
The origins of the card
A key part in the life of a car owner The hands-free card of Renault has become a global phenomenon. First designed around 20 years ago it is among the company's most popular innovations. Pascaline is the head of Cross-Cutting Products in the Products division takes you on a journey of discovery in order to discover the story behind this useful tool.
In 2001, the Laguna II, an executive saloon which embodies 'lifestyle-driven driving", went into production. It was a period of great innovation, with an array of new technology features that helped customers reap the full benefits of their car.
However, the passengers of these cars had to make use of keys to open and close their doors. This was a real obstacle for many and Renault engineers determined to fix it.
They decided to incorporate the use of a contactless card into their vehicles, and then develop an application that would allow drivers to enter and unlock their vehicles by shaking their hands. The card's key is found in two out of three Renault vehicles. The car will be unlocked automatically when the card is close to the ignition barrel, or the centre console. This is a genuine Renault remote control card (without blade). It comes individually packed and is ready to programme using Abrites diagnostics for Renault/ Dacia software with the ProTAG programmer.

The chips are susceptible to cracking from general use and it can be very expensive to have them repaired or replaced at a dealership. We can repair or replacement your Renault key cards for a fraction the price of a dealership.
The first hands-free card was introduced in 2001, on the Laguna II saloon. This car was designed to be the lifestyle car of the 21st Century. Renault could not test all possible uses, despite a detailed design brief which was based on more than 6,000 conversations with customers.
Luckily, the lead product developer on Laguna II, Bernard Dumondel was staying in an hotel at the time, and used his room key to open his car. As the key featured an extremely small magnetic strip, Bernard Dumondel thought it might be possible to make an auto key that operated similarly.
In the years to follow the card was hailed as an innovation that was revolutionary and is now present on two of three Renault vehicles. Renault has opted to use the new features of smartphones to enhance the hands-free cards, even when it appears that they are about to replace it.
The keyless entry system
The hands-free card of Renault was a ground-breaking piece of technology when it was first introduced 20 years ago. Its exterior is still similar, but the technology inside has had some upgrades to make it more secure and user-friendly. to hack.
First of all, it cannot be used to unlock the doors or start the engine from outside the vehicle, unless it is activated by the driver. That's because radio signal antennas "around" the car are configured to detect whether the key is in or inside the car. The key will still start the ignition from a distance however, it won't unlock the doors. This is to protect you.
The other thing to note is that the wireless remote control transmissions of the system utilize a rolling code. This minimizes the possibility of security being compromised by someone intercepting and retransmitting the control message in order to gain access, but isn't a guarantee of avoiding the possibility completely.
